Sea Change Aimee Friedman Books
This is definitely written for young people. The main character, Miranda, is a good literary role model for teenagers. She is a sixteen year old girl who is interested in science and usually has good sense and instincts about people. She has accompanied her mother to Selkie Island where her mother grew up and encounters different kinds of young people, including a young man she is attracted to and with whom she develops a relationship. I thought this was a novel about selkies, so was disappointed that it isn't. The book drags quite a bit, and just when you think something interesting is going to happen, there is an abrupt stop to the plot, or even to conversations. There was a promising turn about an old trunk, key, and dress, but it just turned out to be a mundane family disagreement. There is some suggestion that Miranda's boyfriend, Leo, might be a merman, but there is very little that happens that couldn't occur if he was simply a teenage boy. I do like the way the author uses words in many places, and she is a good writer, but this story was not my cup of tea.Tags : Amazon.com: Sea Change (9780439922289): Aimee Friedman: Books,Aimee Friedman,Sea Change,Point,0439922283,People & Places - United States - General,Social Themes - Dating & Sex,Family secrets,Family secrets;Juvenile fiction.,Islands,Islands;Juvenile fiction.,Mermen,Secrets,Social classes,Social classes;Juvenile fiction.,Southern states,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fantasy & Magic,Georgia,JUVENILE,JUVENILE FICTION Fantasy & Magic,JUVENILE FICTION Social Themes Dating & Relationships,JUVENILE FICTION Social Themes Friendship,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile FictionSocial Themes - Dating & Relationships,Juvenile FictionSocial Themes - Friendship,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,Science fiction (Children's Teenage),Social Themes - Dating & Relationships,Social Themes - Friendship,TEEN'S FICTION - GENERAL,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION People & Places United States General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Dating & Sex,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Friendship,Young Adult Fiction
Sea Change Aimee Friedman Books Reviews
We all have memories in our brain when born like hunters and prey we have to just be reminded. At some point in our evolution we coexisted with mermaids as they intrigue us. That’s why I liked this book! They intrigue us!
Hmmmmm, I actually really liked the book but the ending sucked! So it dropped my star down to 3 & because I don't see another book in the works, if I do find out there's a book 2, I will change my 3 to a 4.
Mermaid lore is revisited in "Sea Change", except this time with a little twist. Instead of the mermaid seeking her prince we're given a "normal" human girl falling for a fish. Friedman's mermaid tale is a lovely take on the whole forbidden love genre. The characters are perfectly painted teens, going through their angst riddled struggles with aplomb. Instead of a loopy heroine we're given the very grounded and logical Miranda, a refreshing voice to carry throughout the story. In true "coming-of-age" fashion, Miranda must be pulled out of her comfort zone and effectively changed by her circumstances. The queen of science is thrown into a world of supernatural mystery, effectively woven by the capable Friedman.
Even though I was already aching for a sequel to pick up immediately after, the ending is the perfect bittersweet companion to a realistically rendered Once Upon a Time.
Miranda Merchant's life was grounded in science that is until she meets Leo, the mysterious young man on Siren Beach. As she gets to know Leo better she starts to feel differently about her scientific theories about life and love.
PLEASE DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK
Many seem to believe the title "Sea Change" is in reference to Leo being a merman or not. I do not believe this is the true meaning of the title.
The definition of Sea change, which is actually from the Shakespearean play, "The Tempest;" as stated in the dictionary means any major transformation or alteration. It can also mean, any change brought about by the sea.
So, it means any major transformation or alteration, this can very easily be brought to believe that Leo is "transforming" into a merman with the change brought about by the sea. However, let us look at it in a different way.
Let's completely change our viewpoint from Leo to Miranda, no, she is not a mermaid. But, a transformation can be not only physical but mental, can it not? So I feel that Miranda is transforming into the girl she is by the end of the book, she is beginning to live again, and she lets her past come to rest, especially about Greg, her ex-boyfriend. Leo helps her realize that not all life is scientific and logical, but there are many mysteries to life, including love and trust that cannot always be explained with 1+1=2 logic.
Sea Change was a sweet, feel-good type novel. From start to finish I was intrigued by the whole mystery surrounding Selkie island. Miranda, the main character, was a science loving, down-to-earth girl. I really liked her persona and automatically connected with her. She was very different compared to the other girly, easy-going girls. I liked that she had this tomboy vibe and didn't feel the need to change herself unless she wanted to. Now, the plot teased me with questions until the moment Leo arrived. I sort of forgot the mystery and just focused on his endearing, magnetic and charming ways. I seriously had butterflies whenever Miranda was around him. I felt like I knew exactly what Miranda was going through since Aimee did a great job expressing the emotions radiating off of their connection.
Another aspect of the novel I enjoyed unraveling was the secrets behind Miranda's grandmother. It was exciting finding out about someone's history that was kept sealed for so many years. My only complaint was unfortunately the ending. It was a good and understandable way of ending the story. However, I wanted something more. I felt like their wasn't any closure since it was left open ended. Overall though, I really enjoyed this tale of romance, secrets and heart-melting discoveries. I recommend this book if you're looking for the perfect book to read on the beach. Trust me, you'll get lost in the story and the background sounds of the crashing waves will be icing on the cake!
Bought this to read after the lifetime movie came out because I wanted more! The story line is pretty different than the movie but the same spirit. I didn't get more out of it though, it's a pretty short book with a pretty abrupt end. I don't think there are sequels. The movie ends similarly abruptly. Overall still like the book
This book is wonderful, the story flows and you don't want it to end. I had one chapter to finish and I couldn't keep my eyes open. I finished it in the morning. As I read I hoped for one ending, wished but, it is excellent. Not disappointed at all. I love this story. But did it end the way it ended or ??
