Confessions of Innocence Innocence Cooper Series Book 1 eBook L S May Reviews
Fully of teen angst, Innocence is sure to please teens and preteens looking for romp in contemporary magical realism. The first person story revolves around Innocence Cooper, the daughter of the leader of the Council for good, who, by birthright, is destined to be the next leader. Innocence, in one way, has it all. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, yet she is intent on spitting it out. Her family is rich, famous and powerful and she is heir to all of it, yet she is torn over her love for a boy from across the tracks, raked by what she sees her father and the Council doing in the name of good and wavering over her place in it all when she doesn’t feel good. To complicate matters, she was born a fire-wielder, a decidedly evil magical power.
The world building is subtle and much is left to the imagination of the reader. The strength of the text is how the author so aptly describes the emotional tsunami Innocence goes through that is so typical of teens trying to define themselves. She has issues with her father, but they are not the typical “daddy-issues” but tearful, soul-searching derived from the knowledge of his position, his personality and her own definition of herself. She doesn’t want to be like him, yet no matter how hard she tries to fight against him, she finds herself following along in his path and ways.
There is also good fodder here to incite thoughts and dialog. Can something which is evil be done in the name of good ever be good? For example if we exterminate evil people to stop them from killing, is it murder? Is it acceptable to steal if you are starving? Is it justified? Do the ends justify the means?
A light, fast read targeted toward young adult, romance-magical realism.
You are brought into a world of good vs evil, witches and warlocks, and Innocence tells the story of it all. This paranormal book does not disappoint. It kept me up all night until I could no longer keep my eyes open. The second I woke up I skipped breakfast just to read more of the book.
I really loved how this book was written, you really got to know a lot about the main character. You could live in her shoes, and experience the world that she was in. It went from heart racing, to love, and ultimately hard decisions. I lived it all, and forgot about whatever else was happening in the world. The world is a crazy place, so this book was a huge, and wonderful distraction. There is no way I could ever stop thinking about this one. In my days I know it will come up in my thoughts, because this is one of those books that grows on you, and sticks with you no matter what. That being said; I can not wait to read book 2 in the series.
I encourage you to give this book a read. Free up some time in your day if you do, because you won't be able to put this one down.
The author has an excellent way to make you feel like you are inside the head of a teen. This is good in regards you really have a feel for each of the characters. The downside is after a while you want to switch back into adult mode and you can't. The writing style is lively.
Sadly, I didn't care much for the characters. Most of them were somewhat flat and I just couldn't stand Innocence at all. It felt like one conversation with Fume totally brainwashed whilst Fume is doing a full turnaround. Bullet seemed to be the most straightforward character in the book who was true to himself. Kim was yet another confusing character that kept flip floping and made it difficult to keep with the book at times.
I do however love the concept of the book. The plot has a lot of potential but just felt a bit rushed at times. There were times when you were bombarded with a lot of different things making it a tad incoherent at times.
With all that being said, I did like the book and I will probably pick up the next one to see where it takes you.
I have received this book from the author for an honest review.
***I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the author.***
So it's rare that I rate a book so low, especially one that I am reviewing. However, I felt really strongly after I finished this book for a big enough reason that it just has to reflect in the rating.
It actually was an interesting story, that could lead to an interesting series and it's a great genre.
Here's my problem I hated all of the characters. All of them. The only one I maybe liked a little bit, was Bullet....and that's not saying much. There was no one I disliked more then the "heroine" Innocence. I thought she was whiny, weak, immature and unstable. She didn't know what she was standing for and kept referring to being "evil" like she's trying to go vegan or something. I thought Fume was backstabbing and Erin was bipolar. I just didn't like them. I felt no connection to the characters and I was desperately trying to.
Additionally, sometimes I felt like the plot jumped around and skipped some details that would have helped the readers.
That paled though in comparison to the lack of connection to the characters. That is just my driving factor for when I read, that connection is something I crave, so the fact that I disliked them and was disconnected was a big hit for me.
2.5 stars.
